Issues

LIMITED GOVERNMENT

Senator Ensign is committed to limited government and the principles of federalism. Our Founding Fathers believed that a government that governs least governs best, that government should do only those things individuals cannot do for themselves, and that they should do them efficiently. The reach of federal government is limited by the powers of the other branches, by the powers reserved to the states, and by the rights reserved to individuals. No government should have a right to impose itself between people and their lawful aspirations to make of their lives what they will.

FISCAL RESTRAINT

Senator Ensign is very concerned about the level of federal spending, the size of the deficit, and the legacy of debt we are leaving for our children and grandchildren. In order to balance the budget, Congress must significantly reduce spending and enact meaningful reform among all federal programs, including entitlement programs. Both political parties are in denial over the looming crisis that will accompany the retirement of the baby boomers. Unless Congress takes action, the financial well-being of future generations will be jeopardized.

LOWER TAXES

Throughout his career in Congress, Senator Ensign has shown his steadfast dedication to cutting taxes. Senator Ensign believes in low taxes because he has seen the economy grow and American people prosper when tax cuts have been enacted. We must make tax cuts permanent and save all Americans from the financial burden that higher taxes will undoubtedly create. Senator Ensign has been repeatedly praised for his leadership on fiscal issues. In 2004, along with Senator Kyl, he was named the most taxpayer-friendly Senator by the National Taxpayers Union, and was named a “Hero of the Taxpayer” for his work in the 108th Congress by Americans for Tax Reform (ATR).

NATIONAL DEFENSE/ WAR ON TERROR

Senator Ensign believes that the Global War on Terror is the defining issue of our time. He believes that we can not allow Democrats to put politics ahead of victory in this global struggle, and we can not allow the United Nations to dictate our foreign policy. Senator Ensign is an advocate of a robust national defense and an effective approach to combating terrorists. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and Chairman of its Readiness and Management Support Subcommittee, Senator Ensign took the lead, focusing sustained attention on the fact that our troops in Iraq did not have sufficient tools to be successful fighting in an urban environment. Senator Ensign believes that we must be victorious in Iraq by stabilizing the country, and we must stay on the offensive, confronting terrorists worldwide, preserving freedom and protecting America and the rest of the free world from future attacks.

JUDGES

Senator Ensign is dedicated to the goal of bringing conservative judicial nominees to the Senate for a clean up or down vote. He is committed to stopping activist judges, who attempt to legislate from the bench from ever reaching our courts, and committed to stopping Democratic obstruction of qualified conservative judges. Senator Ensign is steadfastly committed to confirming conservative judges in the mode of Justices Roberts and Alito.

MEDICAL LIABILITY REFORM

Senator Ensign believes that health care should be more affordable, accessible, and available. To preserve patients’ access to care, he has led an aggressive, multi-year effort to enact meaningful medical liability reform. The medical liability reform bill he has proposed would help America’s families by limiting frivolous lawsuits and skyrocketing insurance premiums that force physicians to limit services, retire early, or move to a state with reforms where premiums are more stable.
