U.S. Sen. John Sununu (R-Waterville Valley) issued a statement minutes after U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) finished his nomination before the Republican National Convention.

“John McCain’s strength as a leader comes from personal experience and hard fought battles in which he has usually prevailed,” Sununu said in a statement. “He’s not afraid to stand alone, but he’s also willing to reach across the political aisle.”

Sununu, who decided not to attend the convention, added that he is “proud to call him a friend.”

“Tonight he spoke about those experiences with the trademark candor that has won him the trust of the American people. I’m proud to call him a friend, and know that as President he will always place service to his country above all else.”

While serving in the United States Senate, Sununu and McCain has attended several foreign trips together and Sununu has often cited McCain has a role model.
